Rory Underwood joins the judging panel for the 2025 UK-China International Photography Competition
The ۴ý China Institute (MCI) is delighted to announce that Rory Underwood MBE DL, England’s record-holding international try scorer and former Rugby Union star, has joined the 2025 UK-China International Photography Competition's judging panel.
As a celebrated athlete, Underwood brings a unique perspective to , themed “The Spirit of Sports”. He is of English-Chinese heritage and spent his early years in Malaysia, before returning to the UK to play first-class rugby for 14 years at the Leicester Tigers.
Beyond his outstanding rugby career, recognised with an MBE in 1992, Underwood also served 18 years in the Royal Air Force, achieving the rank of Flight Lieutenant and logging over 3,000 flying hours as a pilot. His diverse experiences and international background make him a valuable addition to the competition’s panel.
Joining Rory Underwood on the judging panel are:
- Xiaolu Guo - Award-winning British-Chinese author and filmmaker.
- Prof Michael Wood - Historian, Broadcaster, and Public History Professor at The University of ۴ý.
- Krizia Li - Founder & CEO at Vermillion: Asian art + design, Hong Kong.
- Dr Zhang Hai - Director of the Research Centre for Visual Anthropology, School of Ethnology and Sociology, Yunnan University, China.
Together, the five judges will evaluate submissions capturing “The Spirit of Sports,” selecting first the top 30 finalists and then the winners. The competition invites participants from across the UK and China to submit a smartphone photo that embodies this theme, accompanied by a short title and caption, for a chance to win exciting cash prizes of up to £500 and be featured in a ۴ý and China-based exhibitions.
By exploring this theme, we hope that Chinese and British viewers of the photographs can see the world through each other’s eyes, fostering empathy and reducing prejudice.
Submissions must be sent to us via email at competitions.mci@manchester.ac.uk by Tuesday, 1 April 2025 and no professional photography skills are required.
